Hugh Fraser MacKenzie was born on June 19th, 1922 in the White Mountain area. He lived on a farm and was noted as having farmed five years prior to enlisting. His hobbies at the time were hunting and model airplanes. He enlisted in the Air Force in Edmonton on July 2nd, 1942. On his enlistment intake forms he is listed as pleasant, cheerful and keen. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, 9th Squadron as a Pilot Officer (Navigator). He was promoted to Warrant Officer Second Class on April 2nd. Hugh was killed in action over Germany on May 4th, 1944 at the age of 21. The crew took off at 2100 hours from Bardney. It was initially reported that the Lancaster LL 787 that Hugh and his crew were flying in was missing on May 3rd and thought to be prisoners of war, but subsequent reports state that he died in the early hours of May 4th. He is buried in Normee Churchyard, France. He is buried in a communal grave with members of his crew, his parents were informed of this situation in a letter sent to his mother on October 14th, 1950. His parents were George Fraser MacKenzie and Cecile Lenore MacKenzie of Spirit River.
