Administrative history / Biographical sketch
In the 1940s the ladies of La Glace formed a Red Cross Club. When the War was over, the organization continued under a new name, La Glace Ladies Club and then The JUSTAMERE Ladies Club. Some of the early members were Mrs. Norman Edgar, Mrs. Oscar Anderson, Mrs. Frank Kinderwater, Mrs. Roy Robinson, Mrs, John Soderquist, Mrs. Doris Atkinson, Mrs. Fred Bohn, Mrs. Carl Larson, Mrs. Harvey Webber, Mrs. Arnold Saunders, Mrs. Jack Robinson, and Mrs. Arnold Christianson. In later years, club members included Kitty Nash, Stella, Vicky and Marilyn Gilkyson, Bessie Blask, Mabel Hagen, Florence Robinson, Margaret Lowe, Chris Haakstad, Edna Haakstad, Nathalia Schwemler, Dorphy Bekkerus, Esther Olson, Mavis Mouritson, and Olive Thomson. The club worked to raise money for community projects including the hall and also donated to the Red Cross, Cancer Foundation, Heart Fund, Red Shield, Canadian Institute for the Blind, and at one time financed the education of a crippled girl in Korea. They entered floats in both the County Fair parade in Grande Prairie and in La Glace Fair parade and were proud winners of a first with their parade entry in Grande Prairie in 1975 and a first and second in La Glace in 1982 and 1983 respectively They loved to dress up and entertain with skits and musical numbers. They noted that their skill in poetry and music may have been lacking but they nevertheless had a good time. They met once a month at each others’ homes to plan for events and projects, to visit and have lunch. They designed and wore their “bonnets” for Easter and Christmas meetings. By the late 1980s and into the 1990s they often got together and had lunch at the café in La Glace.
Custodial history
The records of the JUSTAMERE Ladies Club of La Glace were created by club members, passed on to Esther Olson and then given to Doreen (Bekkerus) Kuryvial of Edmonton who donated them to the South Peace Regional Archives in 2011.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of 6 pages of club members poetry describing their activities and 62 photographs of members and their activities including skits, musical events, Easter, Christmas and Halloween celebrations, Winter Carnival and the floats they created for parades.
