This Week In 1914 – “Mutilation of the Sonorous Euphonious Alberta”

An ad placed in the March 31, 1914 paper by the Minister of Municipal Affairs gives notice of Grande Prairie’s application to become a village. It’s interesting to note that there was no news story or other mention of this in the newspaper.

Also in the same paper was another bombastic editorial, akin to what we called the “Coca Cola rant” of December 13, 1929. This one goes on at length about the “mutilation of the sonorous euphonious Alberta”, using the abbreviation ‘Alta.’ to save a few seconds time. Wonder how Mr. Pratt would feel about the current post office designation AB?

Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, wife of the Marquess of Lorne, the Canadian Governor General from 1878-1883. It was he who suggested the name Alberta for the newly formed province. The town of Caroline, Lake Louise, and Mount Alberta are also named after her.
