Living in Canada, Fighting For Poland

Walter Mazurkewich was living in Codesa, Alberta when WWII was declared. Walter signed up right away, but not for the Canadian Army as he joined the Free Polish Army.

The Archives has in it’s collection photographs from his time in the war. The photos were donated by Walter’s step-granddaughter-in-law and very little information arrived with them. What we know about these pictures is just what was pieced together from the photos and what we could glean from local obituaries.

Walter moved to the Codesa area with his father and step-mother when he was 12. Walter was born in Poland and not yet a Canadian citizen when war broke out, and that could be the reason he enlisted in the Polish Army. After the war ended Walter returned to the Peace Country and lived in Grande Prairie, he became a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Elks Club and the Shriners.

Walter passed away in 1983.

SPRA would like to learn more about the Mazurkewich family or the photographs that are featured in this article. If you have any information to share please get in touch!
