Donald Morris Matlock was born in Rosalia, Washington on February 8th, 1922. He worked in the farming area of Debolt until he joined the Army (Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps) in May 1941 and he went overseas in January of 1942. Don enlisted when he was 19, he told the Grande Prairie Daily Herald Tribune (May 8th, 2015), that he did so only because his friends were enlisting. Don served in North Africa, Italy and England, where he drove a truck hauling supplies and fuel and picking up vehicles that were out of service. He was discharged in September of 1945, at which time he applied for a half section through VLA. He and his wife Ruby married in 1947 and lived in bush camps until they moved into the hamlet of Debolt in 1952. Ruby and Don had two children. Don then purchased the Crooked Creek Transport Trucking business and hauled bulk milk for ten years. In 1959 they moved back onto the farm and in 1962 began with hogs and cattle, that was when Don sold the trucking company and started driving a school bus. In 1988 Don retired and started playing baseball with some seniors in Grande Prairie. He went on to play in many Senior Games and won two bronze and one silver medal in slow pitch and one bronze medal in golf. In 1992 he sold his acreage in Debolt and moved to Grande Prairie. Don passed away in Grande Prairie on May 1st, 2019 at the age of 97 years old. He is buried in the Debolt Community Cemetery.
