Lindal, Soffanias

Soffanias (Lin) Lindal was born in Langruth, Mb. on October 4, 1918 to Icelandic parents. He attended the Langruth school, completing grade XI. For several years, he was a Transport Driver in the employ of Biggar Bros., Winnipeg.

Lin enlisted in the army on January 8, 1942, at Portage la Prairie, Man., where he trained for some time. His advance training was taken at Red Deer, Ab. He later became an instructor at Nanaimo, B.C., and Camp Borden, Ontario.

Lin first met Bertha Servant at a coffee shop across from the brewery where she worked. They married at Edmonton, on June 17, 1944. On December 20, 1945, Lin received his discharge at Winnipeg as a sergeant.

The Lindals returned to Donnelly, Ab., Bertha’s home place, where they homesteaded on some land through the Veteran’s Affairs in 1947. They had some tough years breaking the land, with no roads, electricity or running water. However, with much hard work they made their home on the farm, raising 6 children. In 1960 the family moved to Edmonton. For the first few years they farmed from the city, then in 1964 they sold the farm and moved to British Columbia.

Lin passed away on October 4, 1985 and is interred at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg, Mb.
