Steve Kucharuk was born in the Ukraine in 1918. His family arrived in Rycroft in June of 1929; the entire trip took six weeks. Steve’s father, Gregory, filed on a homestead in that same month. In 1930, Gregory supervised the building of the school in Volin, but sadly died in 1931 at the age of 31. His mother remarried in 1933 and the family moved north of Spirit River. In 1937, Steve filed for his own homestead. In 1939 Steve and his stepbrother purchased their first car, a Chevy. In 1942 Steve joined the Army and was stationed in Vancouver, Point Atkinson. In 1943, Steve married Kate Symchuk and they lived in Vancouver and Prince Rupert while serving in the Army. Steve was discharged in 1946 and returned to farming. Steve Kucharuk passed away in Spirit River on October 25th, 2009 at the age of 90 years old. He is buried in Devale Cemetery
