Kosabeck, Stephen Harvey

Stephen Harvey (Stevie) Kosabeck was born in Cudworth, SK on July 11th, 1916, he came to Peace River with his family in 1929. They then moved on to Rycroft as a family in 1930, Steven, his parents and his 12 sisters and brothers. When he was 16, he moved to Grande Prairie where he worked for Frank Donald as a caretaker in his three hotels and was usher at the Capitol Theatre. In August of 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy Medical Reserve in Edmonton and took his basic training in Calgary. He then served as a Sick Berth Attendant (S.B.A) in Winnipeg, Halifax, Sidney, and finally Victoria. He was discharged in March of 1946. When Stevie was home on leave in 1944, he married Ruth, who he met while they both were staying at the Grande Prairie Hotel. In 1946, Ruth and Steve bought the Spirit River Café. In May of 1950, they sold the café. They went on to built and run the Grandview Apartments. They sold in 1979 and he continued to do odd jobs in the community when he semi-retired. Stevie also worked on the Spirit River Fire Department for several years and was an active participant on the River Royals softball team. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #72. Stephen H. passed away on August 4th, 1996 at the age of 80 years old. He is buried at the Spirit River Cemetery.
