Kewley, Lawrence Louis

Lawrence Louis Kewley was born in old Battleford, SK on November 19th, 1915. In 1919 the family moved to the Peace River country and farmed a mile and a half north of the Albright store. Lawrence was married to Laura when he enlisted into the Army on September 16th, 1939. According to his war records, he served in Canada from September 9th, 1939 – October 27th, 1942; then served in the United Kingdom from October 28th, 1942 – September 7th, 1944 and finally in Northwest Europe from September 8th, 1944 until his death on March 14th, 1945. In November of 1943 he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service medal and clasp. He was also awarded the 1939 – 45 Star, the France-Germany Star, the Defense medal and the War medal. He served in the Lincoln and Welland Regimen, prior to that he served four years in the Canadian Provost Corps. Lawrence received a concussion and cerebral laceration on July 2nd, 1942 and he was discharged on August 6th, 1942. He was wounded in action on January 27th, 1945 and discharged back to duty on February 7th, 1945. On March 14th, he died; his cause of death is listed as “died of wounds received in action”; he was temporarily buried in Germany and then moved in July of 1946 to the Nijmegen Canadian Military Cemetery in Nijmegen, Holland (Grave 1, Row C, Plot 8).
