Frank Greenfield was born on March 17, 1919 in Gibbs, Saskatchewan. His father had immigrated to Canada from Manchester, England in 1905. There, his parents met, were married, and Frank was born. At age 21, Frank joined the Air Force, was an engine mechanic, and later became a flight engineer. During this time, in 1942, Frank married Marjorie Hampton, who was born in Govan SK. After Frank’s discharge in Calgary in 1945, they lived in a tent on the main street in Spirit River, working at Spinny’s Mill in Whitburn. Hearing of the Lassiter Project in Wanham AB, they moved to Wanham in the fall of 1946, where Frank worked as a mechanic in Lassiter’s garage. Again, they lived in a tent before they rented a granary, and combined it with the tent. Frank worked for the Project for 4 ½ years, one of his jobs being driving cat for the clearing outfit. Then he obtained his own land, two miles north of Eaglesham, which they had cleared. In the winter of 1950-51, Frank and Marj moved in to the shack which was on the farm. They had a bumper crop of registered Victory oats that first year. It was cut and stooked by hand. Frank and a neighbor shared the purchase of a threshing machine which was very helpful for subsequent years. In addition, the Greenfields raised dairy cows, and shipped cream to Edmonton. For the last 3 years living in Eaglesham, Frank drove school bus. One of the hobbies of Frank was flying gyrocopters along with two other friends. Unfortunately, in 1972, he was almost killed in a crash, and was unable to work the farm. Frank and Marj moved to the west coast, then to Saskatchewan, and a couple of years later to Kelowna BC. They had two children: Warren and Sylvia. Warren, who was in the navy, and worked for the Parks Department in B.C. Sylvia lived in Edmonton, and after her marriage, in Kitimat B.C. Marjorie died in 1982.
