Glor, Alfred

Born January 25, 1926 in Chelm, Poland, Alfred was the second oldest child of Johan “John” Glor and Emma Fehlau. There were 4 children: Frederick and Alfred (born in Poland), and Diane and Marilyn, (born in Alberta). John immigrated to Canada in July 1926. The rest of the family, Emma, older brother Frederick, and one-year-old Alfred, joined John in early 1927, arriving at the port of St. John in New Brunswick. At first they lived in Wayne AB (near Drumheller), a coal mining area, where John worked in the mines. In 1931 they bought a house in Edmonton. John purchased a homestead near Culp in the Peace River Country (NW 15-78-23-5) in 1937. The family moved up north in a railway boxcar with their effects, three horses and their Dog (Rex?) in early March 1938. While their log house was being built, the family stayed with neighbors, and Alfred attended Culp school. Later he went to Gauthier School. As soon as the snow thawed, the father and boys worked on clearing land until July, while planting crops. After harvest, the father worked in the coal mines until Christmas. On May 24, 1942 Alfred’s father had a fatal accident with a run-away team of horses. Emma and the children continued to farm for a while, but in the following year, Emma rented out the farm, and moved to Edmonton with Fred. Alfred had already left for Edmonton in November for employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Fred joined the army in 1943, and Alfred enlisted in September 1944. Alfred married Irene Adam on June 17, 1952, and they had one daughter, Janet. In 1963, the family settled in the Strathcona/Edmonton area. Alfred died on November 30, 2019 at age 93, and he was buried in the South Haven Cemetery in Edmonton.
