Samuel Gilliland (Scotty) was born on December 14, 1925 in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland, to parents Samuel and Elizabeth. He had two brothers: Bert, and Drew. At age 17 he joined the Royal Navy, and served his country proudly from 1943 to 1946. He left Scotland to move to Canada in 1948. While working in Jasper AB he met his future wife, Eva. They were married in December 1950 in Rycroft AB. The couple lived in Grande Prairie, where Scotty was employed at Northlands Utilities/North-West Utilities for 30 years, before retiring. Scotty loved history books, music, and his family. He and Eva had 2 sons: Sam and Brian. Scotty died in his home in Grande Prairie on September 30, 2007, at age 81. A Legion Tribute was given at his funeral on October 5.
