Biography:  Dick Gill was born in Huddersfield Yorkshire, England on December 10, 1922.  His father and step-mother were Clarence and Emma Gill, and he had one brother Leonard who also served in WW II.  When Dick was 6 years old, the family moved to Canada, settling in Spirit River AB.  After finishing Grade 8 in Spirit River at age 15, Dick worked as a labourer for farmers in the area for 3 years.  His ambition was to have a mixed farm, in addition to training as a blacksmith. Enlisting in the Army at age 18, Dick joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in Edmonton.  In November 1942 he was transferred to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.  He was posted overseas in March 1942, going first to Calgary, then Halifax, and on to U.K.  During his service, Dick was hospitalized a few times.  He also achieved several medals:  1939-45 Star; Italy Star; Defence Medal; War Medal; and CVSM and Clasp.  Tragically on July 20, 1943 Dick was killed in action in Sicily.  He was first buried in the Field near Railway in Sicily, and later he was reburied at the Canadian Military Cemetery in Agira, Sicily.  The grave reference is 483 Plot D Row G.
