Gerow, Lyle Trevelyan

Lyle Gerow, born on June 19, 1926, in Melfort SK, was the second youngest of 8 children of Archibald and Annie Walker Gerow.  In October 1929 the family moved to the South Wapiti district (south of Wembley AB) to start a homestead. Lyle attended school from 1936 to 1944.  In 1942 he worked in a threshing crew during the harvest and earned $19 which make him feel very rich.  He also worked in sawmills in lumber camps until February 1945.  On March 7, 1945 Lyle joined the army at the Metawata Barracks in Calgary. Before he spent 1 ½ years in active service, he completed his basic and advanced training in Borden ON.  Lyle’s older brothers, Tom, Keith and Lloyd, also served in the army. After his discharge in October 1946, Lyle helped out on Keith’s farm, and was in partnership in the trucking business with his 3 brothers, Tom, Keith, and Lloyd.  Buying his own land in 1948, he farmed until 1953.  Then he rented the land to his sister, and moved to Grande Prairie where he was occupied with various jobs, and was liftman for CanFor industries.  In 1962 he moved back to his farm, working the land, until he sold it in 1995, retiring to Grande Prairie. Although Lyle was a bachelor most of his years, he married Fay later in life.  Lyle was and excellent builder, and enjoyed bowling and golf. He also won “hole-in-one” two times.  Lyle died on December 21, 2021 at age 95 in Grande Prairie, and was survived by his wife.
