Gerow, Lloyd

Lloyd Gerow, son of Archibald and Annie (Walker) Gerow was born on November 27, 1921, in Melfort SK. He was one of 8 children: Allen, Tom, Peggy, Keith, Lloyd, Alice, Lyle, and Olive. In 1929, he and his family moved to the South Wapiti AB, where his parents homesteaded. He took his schooling in this district, and at age 16 he started working at various jobs. In 1942 Lloyd joined the army. (His older brothers Tom and Keith also were in the army, and his younger brother, Lyle joined up later). Lloyd served overseas from March 1943 to January 1946, being discharged in May 1946. For the next three years he and his brothers Tom, Keith and Lyle hauled lumber in a 3 tom Fargo truck that they purchased together. He married Nellie Watson in March 1947, and the couple made their home in the South Wapiti. During the summers they farmed, and in the winter time Lloyd worked in the bush in a sawmill. They moved to Grande Prairie in 1951 where Lloyd worked as a heavy duty mechanic at the Grande Prairie Lumber Company (which later became North Canadian Forest Industries, “Canfor”), for 30 years. Lloyd and Nellie had two children: George and Ann. After retirement, Lloyd enjoyed gardening, being known for his prized plum trees, and golfing, for which he had a “hole-in-one” trophy. Lloyd died on January 5, 1994 at age 72, in Grande Prairie. Nellie died in November 2015 at age 86 in Grande Prairie.
