Engel Ganzeveld’s parents, Peter and Lawina Ganzeveld, came to Canada from Gronigen, Holland in 1913. Their 8 children were: Jake, Engel, Hilda (Hilje), Alberdiena, Foppe (Tiny), Peter, Zwanteina (Swannie), and Rex. At first, they lived in Dalroy near Calgary AB. When news about the Peace River District spread, Peter Sr. was eager to move north. Father, Jake and Engel made arrangements, and the family moved north in 1921. For 3 years they lived in Scenic Heights on rented land. Engel and Jake were hired to work on the farm of Harry Adair, one of the first settlers. A severe flu broke out in 1923, from which Peter Sr. died. The rest of the family then moved to Buffalo Lakes in 1924, and purchased the N1/2 -30—74-7 from Robert Duncan. Soon they also purchased other quarters north and south-east. The (younger) children went to school in Buffalo Lakes. In the winters, the older boys worked at sawmills. Their first gasoline tractor was bought in 1926, and a threshing separator was jointly owned with the Jazz Brothers. In the 1927 to 30’s, a hockey league was formed with neighboring communities, and baseball was also popular. Engel served in WW II, and afterwards he moved to Vernon BC. With his brother Rex, he started a sawmill business for several years in Vernon and Salmon Arm BC. When Engel retired, he moved to Adventure Bay on Okanagan Lake, where he met and married Verna (nee Price) Cover, a widow with 3 children (a fourth child passed at an early age). Both Engel and Verna had a love and respect for outdoors and enjoyed several adventures together. Verna, born in 1916, died in 2010, and before this time Engel had already passed.
