Gallant, Victor

Force: Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC)

Born in 1912, Victor Gallant was the son of Anthony and Ernestine Gallant of Saskatchewan, and one of 9 children (6 boys and 3 girls).  The parents both died in 1922, therefore the children went to St. Hubert’s Orphanage in Saskatchewan.  Victor came from Regina SK to the Peace River country in 1929 at age 17 to live with his grandmother Chantignay who had a homestead in Hythe AB.  The grandfather had passed away at this time. Besides his grandmother and Uncle Joe, his brothers Joe and Louis and his sister Louise moved in with them also.  Victor found work doing odd jobs in the area.  In 1940 he enlisted with the Army in Calgary. Louis also served in the Army.  Serving overseas for five years, he was in the RCASC, which was an administrative and transportation corps providing a variety of support such as material supply transport, and field kitchens.  While in England, Victor met an Irish girl, and they were married overseas.  She came to live in Canada in 1946, and they moved to BC where Victor worked in forestry.  They moved to Calgary, and finally settled in Toronto ON for 23 years and where Victor worked as a cook.  They had a son and a daughter.
