Fox, Donald Gordon

Donald Fox, born in 1924, was the fourth of 8 children of Robert (Bert) James and Ella (Horricks) Fox.  (The siblings were: Ruth, Roberta, Harry, Donald, Lorne, Richard, Glenn, and Claude.)  Donald lived in Forestburg AB until age 11.  His father decided to move the family in order to farm in the Westlock/Sion area in 1934 or 1935.  In 1938 his father, Bert, bought a portable sawmill.  Joining the service in 1943, Donald was stationed on the Pacific coast and in the Caribou area in BC.  After his discharge in 1946, Donald contracted for Swanson Lumber with his brothers and Bert. The Fox Brothers set up their sawmill in Slave Lake for many years.   In 1951 the Fox brothers and father filed on land for their own farming.  Donald took land in the Blueberry Mountain area, and began homesteading there in May 1952. The Fox brothers lived together in a 12 by 16 shack.  Sadly, Bert died in April 1953, and Donald took over farming his land also.  The boys farmed in the summers and worked in the bush and the sawmill during the winters until 1963, when Donald lived on the farm year-round.  The Fox brothers dissolved their sawmill business in 1969.  Donald continued to enjoy farming, and remained single.
