Forseth, Thoralf “Thor”

Thor Forseth, born in 1915 was the son of Ole and Karen Forseth from Norway.  He was one of 9 siblings.  He parents and the 3 oldest children settled in the Peace River country in 1913 and farmed in the Buffalo Lakes area.  (About 10 miles west of Sexsmith AB.)  In 1934 Thor had a job with the Midland and Pacific Grain Elevator, and he was a grain buyer in Grimshaw and Hines Creek for 7 years.  During this time he was married to Ruth, and they had a daughter, Melba Jean.  On March 24, 1942 they moved back to Sexsmith to work in the Grain Company.  While Thor left for the Army in November 1943, his family moved into Grande Prairie.  After the war, Thor resumed his elevator job in Sexsmith, and became active in the community. Their son Gerald was born in 1947.  Shortly thereafter, Thor decided to acquire the I.H.C. Machine and Truck Agency and move to the Town of Peace River.  There he also was very involved in business and civic affairs, and in 1958 he became the mayor of Peace River.  In 1967 the family moved to Calgary where Thor started his own real estate company.   Thor passed away in 2008 at age 92 in Calgary.
