Arthur Whitney Fletcher, known as Whit, was born in Edmonton on January 6, 1911. He was the son of Joshua and Ora Fletcher, Josha being a founding member of the U.F.A. In 1913 the family moved to Grande Prairie by team and democrat over the Edson Trail. They later moved to Dimsdale where Whit started school in the Wapiti School. He also attended school in Flying Shot, and finished his high school in Grande Prairie. Earning his Teaching Certificate at Camrose Normal School, Whit first started teaching in 1934. Some of the schools in which he taught were Steeprock in Goodfare, Wapiti in Dimsdale, Ravenwood in Elmworth, and (after his marriage) Pendleton in Goodfare. Whit married Florence Alexandra Sazwan in 1941. Around that time he served three years in the Army. After the war, the Fletchers purchased a farm in West Goodfare, where they farmed for 50 years. They had 6 children: Gordon, Cheryl, Blanche, Martin, Donald and Helen. Besides farming and teaching, Whit was a part-time field inspector in the oilfield, and he was involved in political affairs, community and family activities. Whit died peacefully at Hythe on March 19, 1995 at age 84. He was buried at the Riverview Cemetery.
