Gelas was born in Ontario on March 13, 1886. He enlisted in the Canadian army in November of 1914 and, in the course of his military career, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After the war, in about 1920, Gelas settled in the DeBolt area on the southern half of 14-72-1-W6. Gelas married Evaline Robertshaw, a widow with two sons, in Wembley on May 7, 1931. After Evaline’s death, he and his youngest stepson moved to Saskatchewan, where he later remarried. He died on May 21, 1970.
