Lyman was born in Toronto on July 11, 1895. In 1911 he filed on a homestead at SW 1-72-5-W6. He served in the Canadian Army during the First World War, eventually achieving the rank of captain. Lyman suffered from gunshot wounds to the left arm on July 13, 1917 while fighting near Ypres. His address in 1922 was in Toronto, so it is unknown whether Lyman returned to the South Peace following the war.
