Henderson was born in Cookstown, Ontario on July 23, 1889. Around 1914, he suffered from a laceration to his right eye, resulting in a complete loss of vision. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1917 and, due to his eye injury, was assigned to the Canadian Forestry Corps. Henderson filed on NW 17-80-8-W6 in 1919, though he later canceled. According to the present address card in his service file, Henderson was living in Spirit River in 1922.
