Fred was born in New Marske by the Sea, England on May 29, 1888. At the time of his enlistment in February of 1915, Fred was living in Alberta and had filed on a homestead at 34-72-8-W6. In October of 1915, he married Dorothy Ellen. Fred was injured several times during his military career. First he suffered from shell shock and a gunshot wound to his right knee in June of 1916 at Ypres; he was wounded again in April of 1917; in August of 1917 he was gassed as well as once again sustaining a shell wound; and on November 10, 1917 he was buried by a shell and severely wounded. Fred served briefly in Russia after the end of the war and was sent back to Canada in September of 1919. As of 1922, Fred’s most recent known address was Willow River, BC.
