Lloyd was born on September 6, 1896 in Cumberland County, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian army on June 15, 1915, just a couple weeks before his father Thomas joined up. Lloyd arrived in France a year later, in June of 1916. He had only been at the front a couple of months when he received a shrapnel wound to his right thumb at Courcelette (September 1916).
