Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Garry “Duke” Edmundson was born in Sexsmith, Alberta in 1932 to Frank and Florence (nee Tommie) Edmundson and grew up in Grande Prairie with brother Richard “Bryan.” Duke became the first professional hockey player from northern Alberta to play in the NHL after signing with the Montreal Canadiens at 16. He later played with the Toronto Maple Leafs and in the Western Hockey League with the San Francisco Seals.
In 1965 Duke transitioned from professional hockey into a career in the manufactured house industry in Corona, California. He later began working with Santiago Communities Inc. and served as a chair on the director’s board for the Affordable Community Living non-profit.
Duke became involved with the Palisades Tennis Club and the La Quinta Tennis Club. He travelled regularly to Hawaii with his wife Donna . Duke and Donna had three children together: Garry, Thomas, and Leslie.
Custodial history
Accession 2018.011 was in the procession of Gord Pearcy at the time of donation. The later accrual, accession 2018.042, was passed from Garry “Duke” Edmundson to Richard “Bryan” Edmundson prior to donation.
Scope and content
This fonds contains records about Garry “Duke” Edmundson, a professional hockey player from the South Peace region. There is a biographical scrapbook made by his brother Richard “Bryan” Edmundson and selection of letters between Duke and Kenny Reardon and Frank Selke of the Club de Hockey Canadien.
