Administrative history / Biographical sketch

The Alberta Square and Round Dance Federation (ASRDF) is an organization that connects together different dance societies to promote square and round dancing in the province including through annual conventions. The Peace River Block Convention is one of the seven zones of the ASRDF, each with its own executive committee and association.

In October of 1969 initial interest was shown for forming a shared organization, with the Wandering Squares group initiating the first meeting. By October of 1972 the first bylaws of the ASRDF were created and the first meeting was held on April 6th, 1973.

Custodial history

This material was created and collected by the Peace Block Convention of the ASRDF. Shirley Temple, who was on the organizing committee, donated the records to the South Peace Regional Archives in 2015.

Scope and content

This fonds contains a file book composed of the planning documents for the 16th Annual ASRDF convention. The 1984 event was held in Grande Prairie from August 31 to September 3rd at the Grande Prairie Composite High School. Forty-five callers and round dance instructors participated in the event. There were sessions for various levels of dancers as well as different styles and steps of dancing including clogging and wheelchair dancing.

The committee that planned and held the event was comprised of members from the Peace Block Convention members and included the Prairie Squares (Grande Prairie), Beaver Weavers (Beaverlodge), Ray Lake Dancers (Demmit), Twilight Twirlers (Spirit River), Pairs and Squares (Grimshaw), Sexsmith Twirlers (Sexsmith), Bezanson Wheelers (Bezanson), and the Fairview Circle Eights (Fairview). Planning for the convention began in November 1982.

The archival records preserved includes final report summaries from each subcommittee, meeting minutes of the committee from 1982 to 1984, publicity and communications with other organizations, planning and applications for event facilities, programmes and event schedules, as well as thank you letters and other correspondence.
