Administrative history / Biographical sketch

In 1974 an arts interested group in Grande Prairie organized together to establish a local art gallery and submitted their constitution and proposal to the provincial government. On June 5th, 1975, the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie (then known as the Prairie Gallery) was established under the Alberta Societies Act and set up in a former chemistry lab of the Northwestern Polytechnic (formerly the Grande Prairie Regional College).

In 1981 the Gallery temporarily moved to Speke Hall, before renovating and moving into Central Park High School in 1985. The Gallery continued to serve as a centre of Arts in the region, including as a partner in the Alberta Foundation of the Arts Travelling Exhibitions program, until 2007 when heavy snowfall collapsed the Gallery roof. The space began renovations, completing in 2012, into the current Gallery that is connected to the Montrose Cultural Centre.
