Biographical Sketch

Louise Arnold, the youngest of ten children, was born in Michigan, in 1901. Her mother passed away in 1910 and her father Edward then married Sadie McDougall in Winnipeg in 1912. The Arnold family arrived in the Clairmont area on the first train travelling to Grande Prairie and rented Arthur Patrick’s farm. Louise attended Big Horn school on the Scenic Heights corner, and her step-mother Sadie served as a postmistress for Niobe.

When Louise’s father Edward passed away in 1919 his wife Sadie left the area for the United States. Louise stayed and taught at Currie school which was located northwest of Clairmont. She also spent time with friends, particularly with the Bredin family at their home “Twin Shacks”.

Louise left the area to take nurses training at the University of Alberta in 1925, though she didn’t finish the program. She married William F. Findlay from Leduc in 1928. After their marriage William and Louise moved to California where they raised three children.

In 1934, Louise accompanied by her children Conn, Bill and Shirley made a trip back to see the Bredins and other Clairmont friends.

Louise lived in Belmont, California until the end of her life and died on January 28, 1983 in a hospital in San Mateo, California.

Custodial History

The collection was sent digitally to the archives from Louise (Arnold) Findlay’s granddaughter Wendy Findlay Kennedy who scanned the photographs from an album that had belonged to Louise.

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of digital and physical reproductions of photographs taken by Louise Arnold while she was living in the Clairmont area. The photographs depict gatherings along the Wapiti, trips to the Beaverlodge Experimental farm, the gatherings at the Bredin family home, Currie school and students, and Montrose School.
