Agency History

The first newspaper in Beaverlodge, formerly called the Beaverlodge Herald Tribune, was purchased by father and son team Peter and Trevor Harris in 1956. Shortly after purchasing the newspaper, the Harris’ changed the name to The Advertiser which they began publishing in late 1956.

In 1959 Trevor and his wife became the sole owners of The Advertiser which they ran for the next 52 years. The Beaverlodge Advertiser reported on local events, notable people, and items of interest in the community and surrounding area. One popular feature of the newspaper was the hospital report, which listed members of the community who were ill and in hospital. The Advertiser was relied on for many years by people of the area to share their news and information with their friends.

In 1959 a newspaper was also started in Grande Prairie, called The Grande Prairie Advertiser. The Grande Prairie Advertiser was in operation from February until June of 1959 with Peter acting as Editor. In 2008, the Beaverlodge Advertiser was sold and in 2012 Trevor passed away at the age of 78 years.

Series 661.04 Newspapers. — 1956-2012. — 65 cm of textual records.

The series consists of issues of the Beaverlodge Advertiser dating from September 1956 to 2008 and issues of The Grande Prairie Advertiser from February to June 1959.

SubSeries 661.04.01 Grande Prairie Advertiser. — 1956-2012. — 2.5 cm of textual records.

This sub-series contains issues of the Grande Prairie Advertiser from February to June of 1959. The Grande Prairie Advertiser was run by Trevor Harris and had an office located at 10114 Richmond Avenue in Grande Prairie. The Grande Prairie Advertiser ran bi-weekly and the contents included featured ads, a sports section written by Fran Tanner, Editor’s Chats by Peter Harris and interesting news and notes about Grande Prairie residents. There are duplicate copies of many issues, however there seems to be large gaps in the dates between issues in some cases. It is unclear if this is from sporadic publishing dates, or if these copies were never donated. It appears that the last issue of this newspaper was published on June 18th, 1959.

SubSeries 661.04.02 The Advertiser. — 1956-2012. — 43 cm of textual records.

The sub-series consists copies of the Beaverlodge Advertiser dating from September 1956 to 2008. The first issues are sporadic, either because it was not published regularly or because issues were not donated. Often there is only a few issues a year. The record is virtually complete from January to December 1968, but from 1969 to 1995 there are only two or three issues a year, usually January and December, and for 1973 there are no issues. From 1996 to 2008 the record is much more complete although there are still a number of issues missing.
