Administrative history / Biographical sketch
The National Farmers Union is an organization made up of farm families who share common goals, a place for farmers to work together to find solutions for the issues that they face. The National Farmers Union Local 830 was formed in DeBolt and received its charter on July 23, 1970. Les Riding was elected President, with Gerry Gunby as Vice-President, Anne Enns as Secretary, and directors Art Dievert, John Doerksen, and Stan Gerwatoski. The newly formed Local had a membership that exceeded 100 members. Meetings were held at the DeBolt Centennial Hall or sometimes at members’ homes. The organization needed to raise funds and found some success in hosting curling bonspiels. The Local also sent members to conventions and they in turn would arrive home with reports on all that was learned. The Local was active and took part in picketing, boycotting, and letter writing campaigns to have their voices heard. As membership declined the club disbanded in 1991.
