Agency History

South Peace Regional Archives was established in January 2000 as a project of the Pioneer Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District in response to an active lobby of individuals and organizations. The mandate of the Archives was to promote and encourage the appreciation and study of the history of the south Peace River Country by acquiring, preserving and making accessible to the public, records in any format which reflect the history of this area. These records are collected from individuals, families, businesses, organization, and institutions and, on deposit, from municipal governments. Funding is provided by participating municipalities: City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, Municipal District of Spirit River and Municipal District of Greenview. After 7 years of operating under the direction under the Museum Society, in July 2007, the South Peace Regional Archives Society was formed.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of newspapers relating to the history of the South Peace River Country of Alberta. These were donated by various donors to South Peace Regional Archives after it was established in 2000, and are not associated with a fonds. Newspapers range in date from 1917 to 2013 and include full papers and special inserts.

Series 506.05 A Little News. — 1989-1990. — 26 ed..

In later issues Ranie Arnold, Babe Bonnett, Tim Heimdal and Terry Smith were given credit for graphic design and layout. There were many more contributors. Genevieve Shultz was the business manager and Mark Marcotte was the advertising representative. The vision was that it would contain a little good reading, a little shop talk, a little civic insight, a little product news, a little sound advice, a little bit of this earth, a little sports, a little stage talk, and be a little off the wall, to be taken with a little pinch of salt.
