Jack Smart walked into the Peace River region to Grande Prairie over the Edson Trail around 1911. He was accompanied by Joe, Jack, and George Crummy. He and the Crummy brothers went to work running their own hotel. He later filed for a homestead, which he never farmed since he returned to Edmonton in 1915 to enlist in the army and went overseas until he was wounded in early 1918. He met and married Annie Soar while he was overseas and they returned to live in Grande Prairie at the end of the war where he worked for the Alberta Railway for a time. He left there to work for Frontier Lumber as a bookkeeper, but in 1930 together with his partner Harry Newton they opened the first 5 to a dollar store in northern Alberta, which they ran until 1947. He also served nearly 20 years as secretary of the school board, was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge, was chairman of the hospital board, was a member of town council, and served in other civic organizations such as the Elks and Kinsmen. Meanwhile, Annie ran the household while teaching piano lessons. She eventually became the first music teacher in the school and was also the organist and choir leader at Christ Church Anglican for many years. In 1943, he was acclaimed mayor of Grande Prairie and held office until ill health forced him to resign after only a year. He continued with his business until 1947 when he sold and retired to Edmonton where he passed away in 1960 at the age of 80. Annie passed away in 1983 in Summerland, BC at the age of 95.

Cliff Turner, born in 1902, played for the Hustler’s Team in Calgary and later in 1920-1922 pitched for the Grande Prairie and Sexsmith baseball teams. He signed on with the Detroit Tigers in 1925. He became ill with typhoid fever and died in 1925.

Community celebration of the Steeprock School Softball Team. This photograph was taken following day. Mountain Trail School District 4071 was organized ca. 1930, and a log school was built at the bottom of Saskatoon Mountain, to the south. This photograph shows Mary Kachaluba and Mary Grendys outside Mountain Trail School. Mary Grendys was almost 15 in the photo and went to this school from grade one through grade nine. She later went to St. Joseph’s High school in Grande Prairie and then graduated from Edmonton General Hospital in 1948. Mary G. said of Mary K.: “Mary was smart too, but rarely came to school as it was claimed that she was needed on the farm. She came for exams and aced them. I always had to work for my marks!”

Mountain Trail School District 4071 was organized ca. 1930, and a log school was built at the bottom of Saskatoon Mountain, to the south. Donor Erin Moure (daughter of Mary Grendys) remembers stopping at this building in the late 1960s when it was still standing straight. Her mother treasured this old school.

Lambert School District 3932 was organized ca. 1920 and a log school built near what would become the hamlet of Lymburn. In 1948, this frame school was built and used until 1960.

Odin School District 4318 was formed in 1928 and a school was built in 1931. This is a Christmas card showing Odin School students in 1935. The PRBI Campus as it looked in the spring of 1936, after it had been operating for one term. From left to right: barn in background, main building, root cellar, Ruark’s house, McIntyre’s house, and Warren’s house beyond the trees.

David Ruark, on the horse, helps his father haul water for the Peace River Bible Institute from Warren’s well on the stone boat. In the background are the two Sexsmith Public School and Warren’s flour mill. The fence divides Bible School property from the public school playground.

An early ministry for Peace River Bible Institute was the Bear Lake Bible Camp. This first site, on the southern end of Bear Lake, was not too satisfactory so was only used one summer.

PRBI opened right after Christmas in 1936. By the summer of 1937, the main building at PRBI had been sided and painted, and a dormitory built. The first floor of the dorm was used by the girls, the boys were on the second floor.

Many Christians throughout the Peace donated toward the purchase of this tent. Pictured here at Fairview in the summer of 1937, it was used for both evangelistic meetings and camps. The cabin trailer at the right was “home” for the workers.

By 1937, a men’s dorm had been added to the campus at PRBI.
