Agency History
The Grande Cache Historical Society was founded in 1994. Their mandate is to “search out and preserve the geological, natural and human history of Grande Cache and area as well as to make the public aware of our findings.” The group meets monthly at the Tourism Interpretive Centre in Grande Cache and hosts field trips/historically themed tours and potlucks with presentations and speakers.
The activities of the society include collecting and preserving historical information about Grande Cache, including newspaper clippings and oral histories, and creating displays of historical material for use at the Grande Cache Tourism Interpretive Centre. The group was also instrumental in creating the “Bird’s Eye View Park” at the Tourism Centre, including helping restore and staff the historic buildings there. Representatives from the Society have also participated in the Communities in Bloom project, signage project, and Rocky Mountain Festival.
The Society has also been very active in publishing books on the history of the area. Their first book, “A History of Grande Cache,” by Richard Wuorinen, was published in 1997 and traces the history of Grande Cache and area up to 1996, including pre-history, Aboriginal people and families, various industries and businesses, transportation and communication, the town, and clubs and organizations. In 1999, a companion volume, “Grande Cache: The People” by Joe Sharlow and Richard Wuorinen was published. The book focuses on personal biographies and family stories of the people who have made Grande Cache home. Another book was published in 2002. Entitled “Legends of Grande Cache and the Yellowhead,” and written by Jack Deenik, Robert Guest, and Richard Wuorinen, it features photographs, drawings, stories and legends about people, places, events, and wildlife in the Grande Cache area. Other smaller publications include “Bighorn Country” (detailing the origins of place names), “Muskeg Ranger Station Forest Rangers 1942-1970,” “Highway 40 North: The Bighorn Highway” booklet, a local history driving tour pamphlet, and the Society’s quarterly newsletter “The Mountain Cache” (first published March 1997).
Prominent people involved in the Society have included Alice MacDonald (former President), Richard Wuorinen (former President), Robert Guest, Jo Sharlow, and Leanne Simonson (former President).
Custodial History
The records were transferred to South Peace Regional Archives in December 2009 by Jo Sharlow, on behalf of the Grande Cache Historical Society.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of records containing biographical information on current and past Grande Cache residents accumulated and created during the compilation of “Grande Cache: The People” book, a project of the Society, published in 1999.
The fonds currently has only one series.

Various questionnaires were used in the years prior to gather biographical information and the records include these as well as various drafts and revisions of the resulting individual and family stories. Some stories also include associated material such as the form letter sent by the Society soliciting stories, correspondence, order forms for “A History of Grande Cache,” newspaper clippings, photographs, recipes, poems, and bulletins and information from Grande Cache United Church. The majority of the records date from 1994 to 1999. The records were originally housed in plastic page protectors by family and arranged in alphabetical order by last name, divided by letters. The original order has been maintained and occasionally re-established by the Archivist. Duplicates and drafts were discarded unless they contained information not included in the final biography. Handwritten originals were kept regardless. | |||
