Administrative history / Biographical sketch

The South Peace Regional Planning Commission was formed when the Peace River Regional Planning Commission, responsible for all of northwestern Alberta, was divided in half, with the dividing line being the Peace River. In 1995, the commission was dissolved, and each county, municipality or municipal district became responsible for its own planning.

Custodial history

Records were donated by Wes Shennan, director of the Planning Commission, upon its dissolution in 1995.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of two scrapbooks of news clippings about the South Peace Regional Planning Commission; two atlases showing the regional planning commission boundaries; a 1972 document titled “Patterns for the Future” published by the Peace River Regional Planning Commission; a 1973 copy of “The Preliminary Regional Plan” published by the Peace River Regional Planning Commission; and copies of periodicals produced by the South Peace Regional Planning Commission: the Regional Review from 1983 to 1986, and Printed Matters from 1986-1989.

Series 0036.01: Scrapbooks

Scope and content:

The series consists of news clippings on the activities of the South Peace Regional Planning Commission and planning issues. Also included are the Public Notice of Approval Advertisements through which the commission announced its planning decisions regarding individual pieces of land.

Series 0036.02: Patterns for the Future

Date: 1972 -1976 (date of creation)

Scope and content:

The series consists of the first draft of a regional policy plan for the Peace River Region, the news releases, newsletters, news columns and public review process that advertised its production; the resulting comments and criticisms from the provincial government, federal government, municipalities, special interest groups, corporate interests, and citizens of the region; and the final published document. The project was completed by the Peace River Regional Planning Commission, a pre-cursor to the South Peace Regional Planning Commission.
