Administrative history / Biographical sketch

The Grande Prairie Junior Chamber of Commerce, commonly known as the JayCees, was formed in the early 1950s. It was affiliated with Alberta, Canadian and International JayCees. The objective of the organization was, “to train young men for leadership; to promote good citizenship; to promote an active and intelligent interest in Civic, Provincial, National, and International Affairs; and to promote good fellowship.” They accomplished this objective by active participation in the community, by initiating community projects through a JayCees leadership and study program, and through social gatherings. The JayCees disbanded in the early 1970s.

Custodial history

After the disestablishment of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the records were stored in the basement of the York Hotel. Records were donated to the archives by Dwight Logan, owner of the Hotel, with the approval of Gordon Astle, J.C.I. Senator #8316, long-time member and past president of the JayCees.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the records of the Executive Board, the JayCees Community Development Programme, the various projects they sponsored and/or carried out, and material from Associated Chambers.
