Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Peter and Christina (Tronson) Wright emigrated from Fraser, Montana to Grande Prairie in 1919. They had seven children: Roy, Melvin Robert “Kelly,” Allan, Marie, Clifford, Peter, and Agnes.
Roy Willis Wright was born in 1917 in Fraser, Montana. He began working at the Nelson and Archibald General Store in 1938. During World War II, he volunteered for service, becoming an Air Gunner in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Between 1943 and 1944 Roy participated in 30 missions in Europe, afterwards working as an instructor for the RCAF until the end of the war. In 1946, he bought shares in the store where he’d worked prior to the war. He gained ownership in 1957, renaming it the Roy Wright Store. Roy married Elizabeth Lucille “Betty” Edgar on July 4, 1951. The couple had seven children: Patricia, Christine, Susan, Margaret, Barbara, Annabelle, and Bill. Roy and Betty ran the Roy Wright Store together. In 1970 the couple sold the Roy Wright Store and purchased East Side Grocery, which they ran as a family business until retiring and selling in 1986. Roy was involved in a variety of community groups and sports in Grande Prairie, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Kinsmen and Masonic Lodge, and the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club. Roy passed away in Grande Prairie on September 12, 1998 at the age of 81.
Melvin Robert “Kelly” Wright was born in Montana on October 2, 1918. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the air medal for meritorious achievements. Kelly was killed in a flying accident in the UK while flying with the 78th Fighter Group on December 10, 1943 and was buried in Cambridge Cemetery in England.
Allan Leslie “Spud” “Phooey” Wright was born on November 9, 1920. He served in the First Special Service Force during World War II, and also served as a paratrooper instructor. He was awarded the United States Distinguished Service Cross at Radicosa, Italy on January 7, 1944 after he crawled 100 feet toward the enemy and charged them, and went back to save a wounded comrade lying in the line of fire. He was also awarded the Military Medal at the Battle of Anzio later that year. In August of 1944, Allan was shot in the head – the bullet entered next to his left eye and exited at the back of his head. Allan married Jenny Alma Mae “Alma” Slater. He worked for a number of years as a painter at the Grande Prairie General Hospital. Allan died in Grande Prairie on January 29, 1999.
Marie Evelyn Wright was born on August 22, 1922. She died on November 9, 2000, in Des Moines, King, Washington, United States, at the age of 78.
Clifford Lawrence Wright was born in 1924. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II but was invalided home after being wounded in Italy. Cliff married Nan Muriel Hurndall on June 8, 1949 in Chilliwack, BC. He was a city councilor and was appointed head of the Health Committee. Cliff died in Grande Prairie in 1964.
Peter Donald Wright was born on January 24, 1927. He was part of the Canadian Reserve Army during World War II. He married Elva Adeline on August 21, 1954. They had three children: Jerrold, Donna, and David. Pete played hockey professionally from 1951 to 1960 with teams including the Buffalo Bisons, Edmonton Flyers, Seattle Totems, and New Westminster Bruins. Pete died in Grande Prairie on August 19, 1989.
Agnes Irene Wright was born on August 5, 1929. She married Harold Ayre in October of 1949. Agnes and Harold had five children: Leslie, Ken, Cathy, Doug, and Margot. Agnes died on November 28, 1999.
