CFGP – Grande Prairie’s First Radio Station

Image: The original CFGP studio and transmitter tower built on the rise of land directly north of the town of Grande Prairie, 1937

The Northern Tribune’s headline read “Old Things Passing & a New Day is Ushered in for the Peace River Country,”then went on to say that “The north country’s long isolation was being broken and a big agricultural inland empire is being swept into the mechanical advancement of the times.”  The newspapers were filled with ads from local companies selling radios.  While CFGP has morphed into Rock 97.7 FM, and there are several other radio stations in town now, it is hard for us to imagine how momentous it was back in 1937 when the first radio broadcast was made.  I thought a small sample of the CFGP programme would be interesting, along with part of the article from the Tribune.
