Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Edgar Addison Umbach was born in Elmira, Ontario on April 2, 1885. Hilda Macdiarmid was born in Elmira, Ontario on September 20, 1899. They were married in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in 1925. Their two sons, Edgar Raymond “Ted” and James Donald “Jim,” were born in Portage La Prairie in 1926 and 1930, respectively.
In 1942, the Umbach family moved to Sexsmith, Alberta. Edgar worked for Sexsmith Supplies Ltd. In 1946 he was elected to Sexsmith village council, and in 1949 he became the mayor. Edgar died in Sexsmith on March 5, 1970 and Hilda died on September 28, 1987.
Ted married Betty Bennett of Peace River. They had a daughter named Sandra. Ted worked at Marshall Wells in Peace River for many years, and also worked as the Diocesan Archivist for the Diocese of Athabasca for a number of years. After Betty died, Ted was remarried to Gloria Irene Pylypiw. Ted died in Peace River on July 23, 2010 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Jim married Laurine Brandenburg. He worked as a salesman for Marshall Wells. Jim was still living in Peace River as of 2018.
Custodial history
Donated to the Peace River Museum, Archives, & Mackenzie Centre by Jim Umbach on August 23, 2010. Transferred to the South Peace Regional Archives on May 22, 2018.

Date: 1908-1989 (date of creation) Scope and content: This series consists of postcards saved by Edgar and Hilda Umbach of Sexsmith. The postcards contain correspondence between family members, especially between Hilda and Amelia Tingley (Edgar’s sister) from Brandon, Manitoba. The images on the postcards feature primarily landscapes from across Canada and the United States. There are also some holiday postcards (including Christmas and Easter).
