Administrative history / Biographical sketch

The Grande Prairie Multicultural Centre Foundation was incorporated in 1993 to operate and develop the Multicultural Centre and address the facility needs of its tenants and members. It took over the responsibilities of the Facility Committee of the Grande Prairie & District Multicultural Association.

In the late 1980s, a Needs Assessment Study conducted on behalf of Multicultural Association identified the old Holy Cross School as the best facility available in Grande Prairie for operation as a Multicultural Centre. This facility was the original Catholic School in Grande Prairie and was still owned by the Grande Prairie Roman Catholic School District No. 28. In 1991, the Multicultural Association and the School District signed a five year lease for the facility, and in 1993, the lease was transferred to the Multicultural Centre Foundation.

Tenants of the building included both casual room and gym rental groups such as ethnic, sports, and dance clubs; and long-term tenants, such as Cygnet Playschool, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Grande Prairie Christian School, Grande Prairie Scottish Society, Grande Prairie & District Multicultural Association, Metis Local 1990, Voice in the Wilderness Tabernacle, Christ Community Church, and the John Howard Society/GP Catholic School District Special Education Program.

After the lease expired in June 1996, the building was demolished and the services of the Foundation were no longer needed. The Grande Prairie Multicultural Centre Foundation was dissolved in 1997 and its assets donated to the Wapiti Community Dorm Society.

Custodial history

The records were preserved by John P. Sloan, Chairman of the Foundation and its preceding body, the Facility Committee of the Grande Prairie & District Multicultural Association. They were deposited in the Grande Prairie Regional Archives in 2000.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of legal documents regarding the incorporation and dissolution of the society, minutes from 1992 to 1997, financial records, correspondence with tenants, and documents showing its relationship with associated organizations: Grande Prairie & District Multicultural Association, Clairmont Bingo Corral Association, and Alberta Multiculturalism.
