Herbert was born in Canterbury, England in 1893. He first arrived in Ontario in 1911. Herbert served in both World Wars. On June 26, 1919, Herbert married Louise Massey of Fort Francis, Ontario. That fall Herb came to Grande Prairie looking for land and in May 1920 he brought his wife (Louise) and their six month old daughter Kathleen to their homestead (northern half of 3-70-12-W6; NW 3-70-12-W6). He and Louise had three children. He and Louise managed the store in Hazelmere and when Herbert decided to join the army in World War II, their son was 18 years old. He joined the Veteran’s Guard. Herbert died in Grande Prairie on August 25, 1980 at the age of 87. He is interred in the Halcourt Cemetery alongside his wife, Louise.
