Goulet, Ronald

Force: Air Force

Ronald Goulet (Ron) was the only son of Denis and Mariange (also spelled “Mari Ange”) Lamarche Goulet. Denis was from Wisconsin USA before he settled in Spirit River in 1915, becoming the first barber in the area. Ron was born on January 26, 1921 in Spirit River. Early in WW II, Ron volunteered for the Air Force, as a member of the ground crew. Because of his poor eye sight, he was not allowed to fly. Ron and his school friend, Jimmy Dodge, were both stationed overseas. Sadly, Jimmy was lost in a flying mission. While Ron was in England, he married a war bride, Joan. She came to Canada ahead of Ron, settling in their new home in Spirit River. Ron obtained a quarter of land from VLA southwest of the town, where he farmed. For a short time, he was also employed by George Shewchuk, the first district agriculturist in Spirit River. Joan and Ron had two boys: Ron Jr. and Kenneth. On September 22, 1949 Ron was tragically killed in a farm accident. Joan returned to England with her sons, and was remarried there to Eric Wright. Some years later Joan mentioned that her time in Spirit River was exciting, and she was grateful for experiencing the “Canadian way of life”.
