Force: Navy
Richard Giroux was born on September 28, 1924 to parents Sylva and Marie Louise (Brulotte), formerly from Alberta, who were living in Washington State USA at the time. There were 4 siblings in the family: Sylvianne, Ernest, Richard, and Irene. In 1928 the family moved back to Alberta, settling in Girouxville, where Sylva started a general store and ran the post office. The boys, Sylvianne, and the mother helped out with the store, until tragically, Sylva perished in a fire that destroyed it and all they owned in 1941. Marie moved to Vancouver BC the following year. In 1942 also, both Richard and Ernest enlisted with the forces in WW II. Richard joined the Navy, spending two years on the frigate HMCS Dunvar, on convoy duty on the Atlantic. For six months he was also working on a mine sweeper, until he was discharged in 1945. Back in Canada, he married Emily Floer on November 8, 1947. They had two children: Marilyn born in 1948, and David born in 1949.
