George Gibbs was born in Scotland in 1912 and moved to the Peace River area in the 1930s. Previously he had been in southern Alberta. Being only five feet tall, he was called Shorty. As a young child he endured a severe lung infection which may have stunted his growth. (His father and his brothers were tall). However, Shorty had an enormous appetite. He dreamed of being a cowboy, and worked at the St. George’s Ranch in Goodfare. Soon he had his own horse, which only Shorty was able to ride. He also loved to dance at the Steep Rock Creek schoolhouse, where he amazed everyone with his talent. After the war, Shorty worked in the Rio Grande area, and as a farm helper for his friend. He died in 1951.
