The Pioneer Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District was founded in 1961 and its first facility, the Grande Prairie Museum was opened in 1971. Since then it has expanded to include a Heritage Village and the Heritage Discovery Centre in Grande Prairie's Centre 2000. In 2011 the Society changed its name to the Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District.
