Agency History
Grande Prairie City Lodge 135, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, was formed in 1919 after it was discovered that there were 50-60 oddfellows in the Grande Prairie area. Oddfellows are an order of the Masonic Lodge. At the initial meeting there were 12 candidates and 5 charter members. D. Bain was voted in as Noble Grand Master and C. Stredulinsky as Vice Noble Grand Master.
The purpose of the lodge was “to promote fellowship, improve the character of man, and to assist the widows, orphans and needy.” In the Directory of Community Services for Grande Prairie and Peace River Country c. 1960, the I.O.O.F. is described as a club that “will assist financially and otherwise with individual appeals directed to them” in the south Peace area.
Custodial History
The records were donated to the Grande Prairie Museum in 1987 by Joan Little from the estate of her father, J.B. Oliver, who was a charter member of Odd Fellows Lodge 135.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of one minute book containing minutes of the lodge’s weekly meetings from its founding on May 14, 1919 to March 18, 1924; and two Visitors and Members Registers from 1919-1927.
