Biographical Sketch
Marion's father, Ed Heller, filed on the Sammy Johnson place, NE 22-71-10 W6, April 2, 1914. In 1915 he decided to enlist but didn't have the money to walk to Edmonton so waited for the recruiting officer who came to Lake Saskatoon. After the War, he took advantage of the land grants to veterans. He married Laura Davis in 1920. They had four children: Marion, Robert, Edna and Beth. Marion attended Appleton, a one-room log school to grade eight and then attended school in Beaverlodge for high school (grades nine to twelve).Appleton School was moved to the Mc Naught homestead and became Euphemia Mc Naught's art studio. She went to Edmonton for one year of Normal School and trained to be a teacher. Her first schools included Appleton, Elmworth, North Sexsmith and Kleskun Hill where she used the exam papers in this fonds to help her students study for the Grade nine departmental exams. From 1944-46 she served as Supply Assistant in the Navy and then taught in Victoria for five years waiting to rejoin the Navy but by 1951 the Navy was still not allowing women to join so she joined the Air Force from 1951-1953. One of her jobs was as the first woman English teacher to the French men of the Airforce. Returning to the Peace country, she was principal of Montrose School in Grande Prairie from 1953-1955. Marion married Vernon Hill from Rio Grande and since 1962 has lived on their farm near Beaverlodge. They have two sons who now farm and one daughter. Marion continued her teaching career in the Beaverlodge Regional Junior-Senior High School (1965-1969) and finished her teaching career in Wembley in1981 as librarian and junior high school teacher. Marion loves to travel by car, bus, train, plane and cruise ship. Because of her interest in many crafts, she has taught sewing and other handwork to her grandchildren, and gives classes in tatting and sandpainting to anyone who is interested.
